As one of the larger areas in Sydney’s North East, Mosman’s short 8km trip to the CBD makes it a notable destination for both locals and visitors.

In 1997, the Government Gazette published a notice stating it had assigned Mosman as the primary suburb under the Mosman local government. After much public debate, the Mosman Council later advised that residents were permitted to make use of the following local names: The Spit, Spit Junction, Georges Heights, Clifton Gardens, Beauty Point and Balmoral.

Providing the primary route through Cremorne, Military Rd provides access to the very heart of Mosman, ceasing at the Buena Vista Hotel. Other transport options are also available, with a number of bus services operating throughout the area.

Previously inhabited by the Borogegal tribe, Mosman’s history dates back before the European Settlement, however, its notable happenings took place within the 1800s. Named after Archibald Mosman and his twin brother George, Mosman played the role as a whaling station, shipping hub and agriculture.

Located along Military Road, Mosman’s shopping district boasts an eclectic range of unique cafes, boutiques and thriving restaurants. The centre extends northwards, heading towards the intersection at Spit Road and Spit Junction. Continuing on for a significant distance along Spit and Military Road, this strip branches out to side streets. Defined as a conservation area, Mosman Council has labelled the 20th century shopping strip a heritage site.

Featuring a collection of grocery stores, a supermarket, bookshops, gift shops, medical centres, cafes and corporate buildings, the Bridgepoint shopping mall is a popular location in Spit Junction. Including many entertainment destinations – such as the crowd favourite, Mosman Hotel – this suburb is ideal for social activities and historical aspects.

With a number of schools in the area, parents can enjoy both private education and public institutions that offer a range of courses and study environments. Among them is Queenwood – an all-girls high school, situated in Balmoral.
